Calculate the approximate amount of water in a swimming pool using its shape, dimensions and average depth. Results are provided in cubic meters, liters, US gallons and cubic feet.
How to Use the Pool Volume Calculator
Use this calculator to estimate the water capacity of rectangular, circular or oval swimming pools.
1. Select the pool shape
Choose the shape that most closely matches your swimming pool.
2. Choose the measurement unit
Select Meters if your measurements are in meters or Feet if your measurements are in feet.
3. Enter the pool dimensions
Rectangular pools require length and width. Circular pools require diameter. Oval pools require length and width.
4. Enter the average depth
Use the average water depth, especially when the pool has shallow and deep sections.
5. Calculate the pool volume
Click Calculate Pool Volume. The result will appear below the button with conversions into liters, US gallons and cubic feet.
Pool Volume Formulas
The calculation depends on the pool shape.
Rectangular Pool
Circular Pool
The radius is half of the pool diameter.
Oval Pool
The length radius is half the pool length, while the width radius is half the pool width.
Pool Volume Calculation Example
Suppose a rectangular swimming pool is 10 meters long, 5 meters wide and has an average depth of 1.5 meters.
The estimated pool volume is 75 cubic meters.
The same volume is approximately 19,812.90 US gallons or 2,648.60 cubic feet.
Pool Volume Conversions
| Pool Volume | Equivalent |
|---|---|
| 1 cubic meter | 1,000 liters |
| 1 cubic meter | 264.172 US gallons |
| 1 cubic meter | 35.3147 cubic feet |
| 1 US gallon | 3.78541 liters |
| 1,000 liters | 1 cubic meter |
How to Calculate Average Pool Depth
A pool with the same depth throughout is easy to calculate. Use the actual depth as the average depth.
For a pool with different shallow and deep sections, a simple estimate is obtained by adding the two depths and dividing by two.
For example, if the shallow end is 1 meter and the deep end is 2 meters:
Use 1.5 meters as the average depth for an approximate volume calculation.
Tips for Getting a More Accurate Pool Volume
Measure inside dimensions: Use the usable interior length and width rather than the outside dimensions of the pool structure.
Use the actual water depth: If you are estimating the water currently inside the pool, measure the water level.
Use average depth: Pools with sloped floors require an average depth for a useful estimate.
Account for pool features: Steps, benches, curves and other features reduce the actual water capacity.
Divide unusual pools into sections: For irregular pools, calculate each simple section separately and add the results.
Why Calculate Pool Volume?
Knowing the approximate water capacity of a pool is useful for pool maintenance and planning.
- Estimating the amount of water needed to fill the pool.
- Planning pool chemical treatment.
- Estimating water replacement requirements.
- Planning filtration and circulation.
- Estimating water usage during draining and refilling.
- Comparing pool capacity in different measurement units.
Pool Volume Calculator FAQs
How do I calculate the volume of a rectangular pool?
Multiply the pool length by its width and average depth. For example, a pool measuring 10 m × 5 m × 1.5 m has a volume of 75 cubic meters.
How many liters are in one cubic meter?
One cubic meter equals 1,000 liters.
How many US gallons are in one cubic meter?
One cubic meter equals approximately 264.172 US gallons.
How do I calculate the volume of a circular pool?
Multiply π by the radius squared and then multiply by the average depth. The radius is half of the pool diameter.
What depth should I use for a pool with a sloped bottom?
Use the average water depth. A simple estimate is the shallow depth plus the deep depth, divided by two.
Does this calculator give the exact amount of water in my pool?
It provides an estimate based on the dimensions entered. Steps, benches, curves, slopes and other pool features affect the actual water capacity.
Can I calculate pool volume using feet?
Yes. Select Feet and enter all dimensions in feet. The calculator converts the result into cubic meters, liters, US gallons and cubic feet.
What is the difference between pool volume and pool capacity?
Pool volume refers to the three-dimensional space inside the pool. Pool capacity refers to how much water the pool holds. In practical pool calculations, the terms are often used interchangeably.
