Estimate roof area and roofing material quantities from your building dimensions, overhang, roof pitch and material coverage. Enter metric or imperial measurements and add a waste allowance for a practical material estimate.
Roof Measurements
Enter the horizontal overhang beyond the building wall.
Example: 30 means a roof pitch of 30°.
m2 per roofing unit.
Use a higher allowance for complex cuts, hips, valleys or difficult layouts.
How the Roofing Calculator Works
The calculator first expands the building dimensions by the eaves overhang. It then calculates the horizontal roof footprint and adjusts it for the roof pitch. Finally, it adds your selected waste allowance.
When you enter a rise/run ratio, the calculator first converts the ratio into an angle using the arctangent function.
Roof Pitch Reference
| Pitch Angle | Approx. Rise / Run | Pitch Factor | Roof Area vs. Horizontal |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10° | 1 : 5.67 | 1.015 | 101.5% |
| 20° | 1 : 2.75 | 1.064 | 106.4% |
| 30° | 1 : 1.73 | 1.155 | 115.5% |
| 40° | 1 : 1.19 | 1.305 | 130.5% |
| 45° | 1 : 1.00 | 1.414 | 141.4% |
| 60° | 1 : 0.58 | 2.000 | 200.0% |
These values are mathematical pitch references. Actual roofing requirements depend on the roofing product, roof design, installation method and local building requirements.
Worked Example
Example inputs:
- Building length: 10 m
- Building width: 8 m
- Eaves overhang: 0.45 m on each side
- Roof pitch: 30°
- Waste allowance: 10%
1. Roof dimensions
Roof length = 10 + (2 × 0.45) = 10.90 m
Roof width = 8 + (2 × 0.45) = 8.90 m
2. Horizontal roof area
10.90 × 8.90 = 97.01 m2
3. Adjust for the 30° pitch
The 30° pitch factor is approximately 1.155.
97.01 × 1.155 ≈ 112.05 m2
4. Add 10% waste
112.05 × 1.10 ≈ 123.26 m2
The planning area is therefore approximately 123.26 m2.
Common Roofing Calculation Mistakes
- Using the building footprint as the final roof area without allowing for pitch.
- Ignoring eaves overhangs.
- Using the raw size of a roofing sheet instead of its effective coverage.
- Forgetting laps, cuts and installation waste.
- Assuming a complex hip or valley roof has the same geometry as a simple rectangular roof.
- Mixing metric and imperial measurements in the same calculation.
